A Picturesque Experience Comparable To Lake Kariba

Jozini Tiger Lodge & Spa sits on a hilltop above the shores of Lake Jozini, in the far northern reaches of KwaZulu-Natal on the Elephant Coast. The building respectfully resembles a traditional Zulu stronghold, and the whole place has been put together to sit inside its surroundings rather than on top of them.

At the heart of it is an open-plan restaurant wrapped in a viewing deck, which is where most of the day tends to happen. There are 70 guest rooms, from Classic and Deluxe through to family Loft Rooms and self catering Executive Suites, each with a private balcony over the water, natural wood furniture and subtle African touches. Days here get shaped by the lake: tiger fishing, sundowner cruises, kayaking, or an afternoon cruise out to meet the resident hippos. On land there are hiking and birding trails, and Big 5 game drives in the reserves nearby.

Children get the 227m Hillside Super Slide, a splash zone and the supervised Dream Xplorers programme. Adults get the rim-flow pool, a fully equipped gym and Mangwanani Spa. A 227m slide running down the hillside, with a splash zone at the bottom for smaller children. Free of charge for resort residents. It is the thing children talk about for weeks afterwards, and the reason a lot of families rebook.

Sundowner and Wildlife Cruises

Large cruise boats take up to 40 people out onto the lake, which makes them work for families, corporate groups, tour groups and wedding parties alike. Afternoon cruises head out to meet the resident hippos. Sunset over the water does the rest.

Get onto the lake under your own steam. Kayaks and pedal boats are available from the jetty, and the sheltered water close to the lodge suits first timers and families. Hire is arranged through reception.

No boat needed. Fish straight off the lodge jetty, which suits an unhurried morning or anyone who wants to keep an eye on the children at the pool. Bring your own tackle or ask at reception.

Self-guided walking trails run from the lodge, or go out with a qualified guide who can name what you are hearing. Antelope are common along the trails, and crocodiles and hippos are usually visible along the shoreline.
