Warm, mineral-rich water rises out of Cogman’s Kloof, reaches the surface at 43 degrees and runs into nine outdoor pools and an indoor pool without being treated or changed on the way. It cools a little as it travels, so no two pools sit at quite the same temperature and you can move around until you find the one that suits you. That water is why most people come, and it is why a lot of them keep coming back.

A day here settles into its own rhythm. Children spend most of it between the waterslides, the water sprayers and the children’s pools, with the activity centre and the Dream Xplorers programme picking up whatever energy is left over. Grown-ups drift between the hot pools, a treatment at the Wellness Spa and a long lunch. Families spread out across the communal braai and picnic areas, and overnight guests have their own braais and their own stretch of pools behind a sliding gate that opens up again in the evenings.

Where you stay depends on how you want to do it. Hotel rooms and suites come with breakfast. The Avalon Suite, the Mountain Chalets and the timeshare apartments are self-catering, with kitchens, braai space and, in the chalets, an outdoor spa bath of your own. Garden Suites sit on the ground floor, open onto the gardens and are wheelchair accessible.

Montagu itself is a couple of kilometres down the road, with a Saturday market at Euvrard Park, the museum, the Montagu Cellar and streets of Cape Dutch houses under the mountains. Walking trails start almost at the gate, the golf club is nine holes and a short drive, and the Breede River is close enough for an afternoon on the water. Cape Town is about two hours away.

The water slide runs all day beside the children's pools and the water sprayers. A super tube was added during the refurbishment and sits inside the stretch of the resort reserved for overnight and timeshare guests.

Children sign up at reception, collect a digital passport and work through six badge categories, from rock painting and beading to a nature bingo walk and a spekboom planting project. Enough badges earns a prize from the Dream Xplorers Champion.

The spring water reaches the surface at 43 degrees and cools as it travels, so each of the nine outdoor pools and the indoor pool sits at a slightly different temperature. You are free to move between them until you find the one that suits you.

It rises naturally from fissures in the rock face into a cavern about five metres underground in Cogman’s Kloof, near Montagu, from an estimated source depth of around three kilometres. It is filtered through rock strata on the way up and reaches the pools untreated.

About two hours by road, roughly 185km from Cape Town International Airport. The usual route runs on the N1 through Worcester, then the R60 and R62 through Cogman’s Kloof into Montagu.

Yes. Day visits to the hot springs run every day and are booked online in advance. A day pass covers the pools, the water slide, the picnic and braai areas, the spa and every eating spot on the property. Numbers are capped, so book ahead.

It is built for them. There are children’s pools among the nine hot spring pools, a water slide, water sprayers, an activity centre beside the pools and the Dream Xplorers badge programme, which children sign up for at reception on arrival.

The Garden Suites are on the ground floor and are accessible to wheelchair users and guests with limited mobility. The Mountain Chalets and the timeshare apartments are not: the chalets involve stairs and the apartment bathrooms are too small for a wheelchair.

No. Avalon Springs does not accept pets in any of its rooms, suites, chalets or apartments.

Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out is strictly by 10:00 on the day of departure, for hotel rooms, self-catering units and timeshare bookings alike. A late check-out is charged by the hour and depends on availability.
