WELCOME TO BILENE CLUB LODGE

A Coastal Travel Gem In Mozambique

Bilene sits about two hours north east of Maputo on tarred road the whole way, so no 4×4 and no drama. What waits at the end of it is the Uembje Lagoon, roughly 8km wide and 27km long, held back from the Indian Ocean by a towering sandbar. The water in front of the lodge is warm, shallow and calm, which is why families keep coming back.

The lodge sits right on the shore. White sand and sunshades run along the front, the pool overlooks the beach, and the kayaks are racked at the water’s edge. Days here start slowly and end on the water, and most guests stop checking the time by the second morning.

Everything is self-catering. The apartments and villas have fully equipped kitchens, private patios and braai facilities, and many of them open onto uninterrupted lagoon views. There is no restaurant or shop on the property, which turns out to suit the place: fish and prawns come off the boats each day, and dinner happens on your own patio.

Bilene village is a short walk away, with fresh produce, cashew nuts, brightly coloured capalanas and cafes along the beach. Between the market, the boat trips to the lagoon mouth and the dunes across the water, there is plenty to fill a week.

Kayaks, canoes and paddle craft are kept at the lodge, with paddles and life jackets in assorted sizes. The lagoon is calm enough that first-timers manage easily, and a sunset paddle brings you close to flamingos, pied kingfishers and malachite kingfishers.

Snorkelling gear for adults and children is available at reception, and staff will point you to the better spots around the lagoon. Guided snorkelling trips run for a minimum of four people and a maximum of eight, so book ahead to secure your place.

Boat Trip To The Lagoon Mouth

The scheduled trip runs twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, leaving the jetty at 09:00 and returning at 12:00 with up to 20 people aboard. Private trips to the mouth can also be arranged for groups of four to fifteen.

A 45-minute boat trip and a 25-minute walk over the dunes bring you to Turtle Rock, where there is a good chance of seeing leatherback turtles. The trip takes a minimum of four people and a maximum of fifteen, and is booked at reception.

Sunset Cruise On The Lagoon

An hour and a half on a motorboat, limited to ten people, returning to Bilene beach just after dark. Departure shifts with the season, so check the time at reception. Bring your own drinks or ask reception to organise something local.

A private fishing trip on the lagoon runs one and a half to two hours and is arranged at reception, with a small selection of rods available. Choose a larger motorboat or a small dhow for up to four, with a minimum of four people and a maximum of eight.

It’s a beautiful place on the beachfront and near the ocean. It’s a lagoon – the water is nice and calm. The weather is not bad, it’s not as bad as in Maputo. The place is clean and the chalets accommodate 4 people, there’s a sitting room and a kitchen where you can prepare your food.it also has a swimming pool. It’s 200km from Maputo so when you visit Bilene buy your groceries from Maputo as there are a few grocery shops with limited supplies and the nearest town is plus or minus 100km away

Bilene Club Lodge is at Praia do Bilene in Mozambique’s Gaza Province, on the shore of the Uembje Lagoon. It is roughly a two-hour drive north east of Maputo, on tarred road the whole way, so no 4×4 is needed.

Yes. Every apartment and villa has a fully equipped kitchen, and there is no restaurant or shop on the property. Guests buy fresh fish and prawns from the local fishermen or the market, and there are restaurants and bars nearby in Bilene village.

South African passport holders do not require a visa to enter Mozambique. South African travel law also requires an unabridged birth certificate for anyone under 18 leaving or entering South Africa, so pack it alongside the passports.

Bilene is a high-risk malaria area. Consult a health-care professional before you travel for current advice on precautions and prophylaxis, and bring mosquito repellent. Bedrooms at Bilene Club Lodge are fitted with mosquito nets.

The Uembje Lagoon carries most of it: kayaking, snorkelling, fishing, boat trips to the lagoon mouth and sunset cruises. Dune sledding, birdwatching and the market in Bilene village fill the rest. Excursions are booked at reception.

No, pets are not allowed. A no-smoking policy applies across the resort, and swimming towels are not provided, so bring your own for the pool and the beach. Bath towels and linen are supplied in the units.

Check-in at Bilene Club Lodge is from 14:00 and check-out is before 10:00. Reception closes at 22:00. The resort WhatsApp line is staffed from 08h00 to 17h00 on weekdays and is not available after hours.

Yes. Bilene Club Lodge has a slipway for launching boats and jet skis, plus a jetty and parking for boats and trailers. Fishing permits are obtained from Marintimho, and reception will tell you where to go.
