The Kruger On Your Doorstep

Burchell’s Bush Lodge sits a kilometre from the Paul Kruger Gate and about 350 metres from the banks of the Sabie River, tucked into landscaped gardens and indigenous woodland in Sabie Park. From the moment you arrive the sounds of the bushveld are around you, signalling that your Kruger trip has already begun.

The chalets are self-catering and built for easy days. Each one is air-conditioned, serviced daily, and comes with a proper kitchen, a covered patio and a built-in braai. Enjoy coffee and rusks on the patio while the dawn chorus works its way through the trees. The many bushveld trees on the property attract a real variety of birds, especially in summer when the local species are joined by migrants.

Game viewing is the heart of it. Guided drives head into the park through Paul Kruger Gate with rangers who know where the animals are likely to be and why, and a full-day safari gives you time to go deeper. On the property itself you will see impala, nyala, kudu and bushbuck moving between the lodges.

Between outings there is the swimming pool, which is a proper relief after a hot morning in a vehicle, and the Skukuza Golf Course a short drive away inside the park itself. Evenings are quiet, dark and full of sound, and most guests end up back on the patio.

The lodge sits in open woodland with no fence between it and the bush, so wildlife moves through the camps freely. Impala, nyala, kudu, bushbuck and vervet monkey are all regular, and the many bushveld trees pull in a real variety of birds, especially in summer.

The Paul Kruger Gate is one kilometre from the lodge, which puts the whole southern Kruger within reach of an early start. Big 5 game viewing is central to the Burchell's experience, and the proximity means you are through the gate while the light is still good.

The only golf course inside the Kruger National Park, a short drive away on the road to Paul Kruger Gate. Built in 1972 and now open to the public, it is a 72-par, nine-hole, 18-tee course where fairways run through natural bushveld and wildlife sightings are part of the round.
