A Safari Lodge on the Edge of the Ghoha Hills

The lodge stands on the rugged edge of the Ghoha Hills, and in front of it the land falls away. From the main deck the Savuti Plains run out to the horizon, marked by ancient game routes, by seasonal marshes that fill and empty with the rains, and by open country where elephant, lion and hyena move below without much reference to whoever is watching from above.

Eleven tented suites are spaced along the hillside, each with a private viewing deck and a long view. The main area is thatched and open to the air, its dining space, bar and small lounges arranged around an active waterhole below, so the wildlife watching carries on through lunch and through the slow middle of the day.

Days run to the rhythm of the Savuti. Mornings begin early and cool, with drives out across a private network of roads. Afternoons ease off beside the rock pool or on your own deck. As the light drops the lodge becomes a gathering point for sundowners, and dinner follows beneath the open night sky.

It is a small lodge, eleven rooms, run on solar power with waste systems built for a place where nothing should be left behind. Ghoha Hills Savuti holds an Eco Tourism certification for the low impact it keeps on the land around it.

OUT ON THE PLAINS

Game Drives, Excursions and Long Evenings

Mornings and afternoons are given over to guided drives on the lodge’s own road network, with longer excursions running out to the Savuti Marsh and the rock art beyond it. Between them there is birdwatching from the deck, a spa above the plains, and some of the clearest night skies in Botswana.

Game Drives

Morning and afternoon drives go out in open 4x4 vehicles on the lodge's own private network of roads and waterholes. Vehicles seat six and are shared, with private vehicles available at an extra cost. Savuti is known for its elephant herds, its lion and its hyena.

Savuti Excursions

A full day out to the Savuti Marsh, taking in the Baobab Theatre, the Bushman rock paintings and Pimple Hills, with a picnic lunch along the way. The excursion runs for guests staying two nights or more, which is worth knowing when you plan the trip.

Sundowner Drives

The afternoon drive runs around two hours and finishes with a drink somewhere chosen for the light. Sundowners are set up beneath the ancient baobabs or at the hide overlooking the waterhole, and the vehicle is back at the lodge by the time it is properly dark.

Birdwatching

The Savuti region draws a wide range of resident and migratory species, and the birding needs no separate outing. It happens on the drives, around the main area, and from your own viewing deck with a coffee, which is where a fair amount of it gets done.

Stargazing

There is almost no light pollution in this part of Chobe, so the night sky over Savuti comes out exceptionally clear. Guests watch it from the lodge decks or from around the boma fire after dinner, usually without anyone having planned to.

Private dinners can be arranged for an occasion, or simply for an evening on your own, set up in a chosen spot within the main lodge area. Speak to the lodge during your stay and the team will put it together.

FAQ

Ghoha Hills Savuti stands on the edge of the Ghoha Hills in the Savuti area of Chobe National Park, northern Botswana. The lodge lies roughly 150km south west of Kasane and 230km north east of Maun.

Most guests fly into Kasane or Maun and continue by light aircraft to the Savuti airstrip, followed by a road transfer. A 4×4 road transfer from Kasane takes about three hours. Air and road transfers carry a two guest minimum.

Eleven tented suites, sleeping up to 26 guests in total. Nine are twin or super king suites for two, and two are family suites with an interleading second room, sleeping four.

Yes. Chobe National Park is a malaria area and precautions are advised throughout the year. Consult your doctor about prophylaxis before travelling, use insect repellent, and wear light long sleeved clothing during the day.

Wi-Fi reaches the main area and the pool. There is no telephone line at the lodge, which keeps a satellite phone and a radio for emergencies, so plan on being largely out of contact while you are in Savuti.

All ages are welcome at Ghoha Hills Savuti, and two of the eleven suites are family suites with an interleading second room. A child policy applies, so confirm the detail with the lodge when you book.

Ghoha Hills Savuti runs primarily on a solar farm, with modern waste management systems in place. The lodge holds an Eco Tourism certification for the low impact it keeps on the surrounding wilderness.
