WELCOME TO PIEKENIERSKLOOF

A 4-Star Mountain Resort at the Top of the Pass

The drive does half the work. Piekenierskloof Pass climbs in long, easy curves off the N7 on the Cape to Namibia route, and by the time the road levels out at the top the town of Citrusdal is spread out below you and the Cederberg fills the whole horizon. The resort sits right there, lawns running down to the pool, with nothing in the way of the view.

Stay in a hotel suite with a patio or balcony over the valley, or take one of the self-catering chalets, which sleep up to six and come with a fully equipped kitchen, a fireplace and a covered braai. Either way the pace is yours to set. Families, couples and groups all find room here to relax and reconnect. 

Days can be as full or as slow as you like. There is archery and air golf on the lawns, mini golf, remote control car racing, walking trails leading out into the fynbos and a games room stocked with a pool table and table tennis. Younger guests sign up for the Dream Xplorers programme at reception and work their way through the jungle gym, the trampolines and the outdoor chess set. Grown-ups tend to end up at the indoor heated pool or in the wellness centre.

Kloof Restaurant handles the rest, with meals served indoors or out on the deck where the valley does the decorating, and a well-stocked bar pouring local beers and Cederberg wines. Beyond the gate there is rooibos to taste at Carmien, wine at the Piekenierskloof tasting room, a nine hole golf course on the banks of the Olifants River, and in spring a wildflower season that turns the whole area into something worth driving for.

Fill the Day, or Don't

There is plenty here to keep everyone busy, from archery sessions on the lawn to a nine hole golf course down in the valley. Full detail sits on the Activities page.

Archery

Supervised sessions on the resort's own range, with fifteen standard bows supplied and an instructor walking you through holding the bow, aiming and firing at a static target. Suitable from about eight years old, and no experience is needed to take part.

Air Golf

A compressed air launcher sends the ball down the fairway instead of a club, which levels the playing field between anyone who golfs and anyone who does not. Set up on the lawns with the Olifants Valley spread out below the tee.

Mini Golf

A nine hole mini golf course laid out through the resort's gardens, easy enough for small children and competitive enough to settle an argument. It is the most booked activity here and the one the Dream Xplorers reward ladder starts with.

Walking and Hiking Trails

Trails lead straight out from the resort into the fynbos along the top of the pass, with open landscape, big views back over Citrusdal and no gate to drive through first. Walk them at your own pace and tell reception which way you are heading.

Remote Control Car Racing

Radio controlled cars run on a track at the resort, which turns out to hold the attention of adults for considerably longer than anyone expects. It is a good filler between a late breakfast and an afternoon at the pool.

Painting

A guided painting session run at the resort, added to the activity list recently and aimed at guests who would rather spend an afternoon making something than climbing something. Ask at reception which days it is running while you are staying

The resort sits at the top of Piekenierskloof Pass on the N7, just above the town of Citrusdal in the Western Cape. It is roughly a two hour drive north of Cape Town and a short drive from Citrusdal itself, with Cederberg views in every direction.

Piekenierskloof has 22 hotel rooms and 16 self-catering chalets. Hotel rooms and suites come with daily housekeeping and room service, while the chalets have a full kitchen, a fireplace and a covered braai, and sleep up to six.

Yes. There is a play area with a jungle gym, trampolines and an outdoor chess set, an indoor games room, two pools and the Dream Xplorers kids’ programme, which children sign up for at reception on arrival.

No, pets are not permitted at Piekenierskloof Mountain Resort. A strict no smoking policy also applies indoors, and a penalty is charged where it is broken.

Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out is before 10:00. Late check-out can sometimes be arranged with reception and carries an hourly surcharge, so it is worth asking when you book.

Kloof Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily from 06:30 to 21:00, indoors or out on the deck above the valley. The menu is varied and includes options for children, and the bar stocks local beers and Cederberg wines.

Piekenierskloof runs a backup generator, so power continues through scheduled outages. Some services and facilities may be limited while the generator is running, and reception will explain what is affected during your stay.

Yes. Two conference venues seat 60 delegates each and open into a single room for up to 120. The same space, together with the lawns and their mountain backdrop, is used for weddings and celebrations. Quotes are handled by the resort directly.
