A QUIETER CORNER OF CHOBE

A Safari Shaped by Space and Silence

Chobe is known for its river, and most of its traffic goes there. Nogatsaa sits inland and east, in a landscape of clay-bottom pans, open grassland and teak forest that most visitors to the park never see. The lodge is built on the edge of Kwikamba Pan, the largest of them, and the view from the deck is simply the pan and whatever has come down to it that morning.

Twelve tents stand on raised platforms above the grass, positioned so that the pan sits in front of you from the bed, the deck and the bath. The camp reads as a safari of an earlier era, with open sides, timber, lime-washed floors and nothing between the lounge and the plains. It is small on purpose. Twenty-eight guests is the whole camp.

Days here take their shape from the animals. The clock has very little to do with it. Morning and afternoon drives run out across the Ngwezumba riverbed and the teak, the middle of the day belongs to the pool and the shaded decks, and the hides are there for anyone who would rather sit still and let the game come in to drink. Guests who never leave the lounge still see a great deal.

Getting here takes some doing, which is the point. It is two hours by road from Kasane through the park, or a short flight into the lodge’s own airstrip. The camp runs on a solar farm and holds Eco Tourism Botswana certification, and the wilderness it looks out over stays as it is.

Game Drives, Hides and the Long Afternoon

Mornings and afternoons go out in open 4×4 vehicles across a network of roads through teak forest, ancient riverbed and open pan. Between drives there are hides at the water, a pool with a view over the pans, and a deck that does most of the work for anyone who would rather stay put.

Game Drives

Morning and afternoon drives go out in open 4x4 vehicles, three to four hours after breakfast and about two at sundown. The road network takes in the Ngwezumba riverbed, teak forest, open pans and waterholes. Vehicles seat six guests, and a private vehicle can be arranged at extra cost.

Private Viewing Hides

Hides sit at the pans and waterholes, putting you at eye level with whatever comes down to drink. Nothing is chased and nothing is announced. It suits photographers, and anyone who would rather wait an hour in one place than cover twenty kilometres of road.

Armchair Safari

Game viewing from the lodge decks and the raised platform, with no vehicle involved at all. Herds cross the pan in front of the main area through the day and birds work the water's edge, so guests who stay in camp between drives usually still have something to report at dinner.

Birdwatching

Pans, teak forest and the Ngwezumba riverbed sit within a few kilometres of one another, and that range of habitat is what brings the range of birds. The seasons move different species onto the water, which rewards casual watchers and people who arrived with a list.

Sundowner Drives

The afternoon drive runs about two hours and stops somewhere with a view for a drink as the light goes. Where it stops depends on where the animals are and what the sky is doing, so no two evenings put you in quite the same place.

Stargazing

The raised viewing deck was built partly for this. Humidity in the Chobe area stays low and there is nothing on the horizon competing with the sky, so the stars arrive in full. Most guests find their way up there after dinner and stay longer than they meant to.

This is an unusual lodge and we enjoyed our time here. It is remote. We got here by a land transfer from Ghoha Hills and we do recommend that, as you see parts of Chobe that you may not otherwise see. For the last 2 hours of the ride we did not see a single other vehicle and the landscapes were wild. We had some good wildlife sightings enroute, including eland.

One you are at the lodge, you can indeed enjoy an “armchair safari” and we recommend that. The wildlife coming to the pan is plentiful, even though there was a pride of around a dozen lions hanging out, guarding their prey!

The food and service were exemplary. Our guide was friendly and enthusiastic. You do need to take care around the lodge because of the lions. It is such a privilege to be amongst them and the staff make sure that you are safe. Altogether it made a fine contrast to the other lodges we went to; the remoteness, the few other vehicles and the view of the huge pan. We enjoyed a few days of downtime there at the end of our trip.

FAQ

Nogatsaa Pans Chobe Lodge is built on the edge of Kwikamba Pan in the Nogatsaa area of Chobe National Park, in the eastern part of the park in northern Botswana, roughly 80km from Kasane.

By road transfer from Kasane Airport, about two hours through the park, or by light aircraft into the lodge’s own airstrip about eight minutes away. Helicopter transfers also run. All are pre-booked with your reservation.

Twelve tented suites on raised platforms overlooking Kwikamba Pan, taking 28 guests in total. Ten are twin or double suites and two are family suites with interleading rooms and a shared deck.

Wi-Fi is available in the main lodge area only. There is no telephone communication in the tents. The lodge keeps a satellite phone and a radio for emergencies, so you are reachable if it matters.

The lodge takes children from six years of age and has two family tented suites with interleading rooms. A separate child policy applies, so confirm ages with reservations at the time of booking.

Yes. Malaria is present in the Chobe region and is most prevalent through the rainy season. Speak to your doctor about prophylaxis before you travel, and pack repellent and light long-sleeved clothing.

Private viewing hides look out over the pans and waterholes, and the raised deck and pool give you game viewing without leaving camp. There is birding, stargazing, in-tent massage treatments and a small library.
