On the quiet northern shore of Lake St Lucia, inside the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Malkoha is reached by ferry and remembered long after.
Find Malkoha Lake St. Lucia on:
WILDERNESS, WILDLIFE AND HERITAGE
At the northern reaches of KwaZulu-Natal, where land and water thread through some of Africa’s most intricate ecosystems, three places share a purpose: Malkoha Lake St. Lucia, Untravelled Trails and the community-owned Makhasa.
AN INVITATION
From the still water of Malkoha Lake St. Lucia to the untravelled paths of the eastern shores and the community-owned wilderness of Makhasa, the Zululand Wilderness Triangle moves through a landscape that has been left largely as it was. Each of the three holds a different part of it, and the journey between them is the point.
This is an invitation to experience Zululand as it has always been: wild, wise and wonderfully alive.
THREE WORLDS
Each experience, whether a sunrise ferry across Lake St Lucia, a guided forest meditation or a fireside story beneath the African skies, opens up the ancient rhythm of this region and how closely its landscapes and its people are bound together.
In the stillness of the ancient trees of the rare sand forests, on the banks of the Lake St Lucia estuary.
Across the Big Five heartlands of Makhasa and Phinda, private game reserves where nature reigns freely.
In the living culture and traditions of the Zulu people and the surrounding local community.
A curated stay includes encounters shaped with our partners at Untravelled Trails and Makhasa, each one designed to take you further into the forest, the wild and the culture of Zululand.

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE
It is the million small things that make this a journey you will not forget, and they begin long before the bags are packed. Tell us what you would like ahead of time and we will shape a stay that feels like yours.
Malkoha Lake St. Lucia
Each night ends with a thoughtful turndown and a Zulu proverb, such as Izinyoni ziyaqonda lapho zizalelwa khona, birds always return to where they were born. Departure is marked by a farewell bracelet tied with a whispered blessing: return always. Guests may also plant a tree, or receive the GPS coordinates of one planted in their honour, which stays on the peninsula after they have gone.
Evenings open with the call of the kudu horn and a hand-washing ritual using a bowl and calabash, a cleansing before the meal. Dinner celebrates local, seasonal ingredients, and on alternate nights the boma comes alive with Zulu song, rhythm and storytelling beneath the stars.
• Pre-arrival welcome pack
• Ferry transfers to and from the lodge
• Signature welcome rituals
• Breakfast, lunch and dinner, including an African High Tea and a boma dinner feast
• One curated morning and one curated evening activity of your choice daily, one of which may be a Dream Spa treatment
Each morning begins with freshly brewed coffee, chai or rusks, followed by a bush breakfast, a lake brunch, or tea and warm baked treats on the deck. Mornings then open into a guided activity hosted by Untravelled Trails, and the stillness of the forest does the rest.
Malkoha Lake St. Lucia, formerly Nibela Lake Lodge, reopened on 1 November 2025 and brought a different kind of travel to one of the most diverse estuarine systems on earth. The lodge lies among rare sand forest, an ecosystem formed millions of years ago from ancient coastal dunes. Everything within it is deliberate, from the African High Tea beneath the trees to the stories shared around the reimagined lakeside boma and the cultural encounters that carry the essence of Zululand.
Arrive by private ferry across Lake St Lucia, Africa’s largest estuarine lake, as vast water vistas open ahead of you. At Malkoha’s jetty guests are met with rituals that honour the land and its people. Handmade keepsakes carry the stories of the people who made them, and intention stones invite a moment to pause, breathe and begin again. On the deck the host greets each guest with the Zulu proverb Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu, I am because we are, and a cold-pressed juice arrives while the activity options are introduced.
Untravelled Trails
On the eastern shores of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park lies Untravelled Trails, a specialist eco-tourism partner and concessionaire working in low-impact exploration and environmental education. It offers a rare chance to walk Zululand as it was before roads, fences or crowds, an elemental encounter that restores the walker while supporting conservation and local livelihoods directly.
The philosophy is simple: you walk, we carry. Guests set off with a small backpack of personal items and a sleeping bag, moving lightly across the pristine Tewate Wilderness Area. Armed professional guides read the geology, the plant life and the layered history of the landscape along the way, and the pace leaves time to take the terrain in. The route enters ancient forest and follows game paths to a simple pop-up tented trails camp set beneath a cathedral canopy, where warm open-air showers, fireside meals and the noise of nocturnal life are waiting.
Makhasa Private Game Lodge
Bordering the Phinda Private Game Reserve within the Munywana Game Reserve, Makhasa Private Game Lodge carries a story of reclamation and restoration. This land was farmland before it was returned to the Makhasa community, who chose to restore it to wilderness. It now forms part of a 30,000 hectare unfenced ecosystem, and with the fences between Makhasa and Phinda removed, wildlife moves freely across seven distinct habitats in a landscape that protects biodiversity while sustaining the community that lives in it.
Owned and operated entirely by the Makhasa people, the lodge stands as a model of inclusive eco-tourism: a Big Five destination where cultural heritage sits alongside modern safari comfort. Six thatched suites are linked by shaded walkways to a central dining deck, a lounge and an open-air boma. Guests take daily game drives with Phinda-trained rangers across more than 12,000 hectares, and between drives there is time to share stories around the fire, taste traditional cuisine and learn the crafts and songs that this Zulu community has kept.
PLANNING YOUR SOUL CIRCUIT

WILDERNESS FACT
The sand forest is a rare and fragile subtype of tropical dry forest, growing on the remnants of ancient sand dunes formed millions of years ago, when the ocean withdrew eastward to the coastline we know now. It is smaller and more distinctive than the ecosystems around it, which is what makes its protection so pressing.
Much of the sand forest that survives has been degraded by past cattle farming and by the unchecked spread of invasive plants, and the habitat is classified critically endangered. Because these forests are already fragmented, they face a greater risk of further loss, and continued decline would mean reduced genetic diversity and, eventually, the extinction of species. Each surviving patch holds biodiversity the others do not, so protecting one patch is not enough to safeguard the whole.

Walking a multi-day trail while your luggage is carried for you. Guests set off with a small backpack and a sleeping bag, and armed professional guides interpret the geology, plant life and history of the landscape along the way.
The land was farmland before it was returned to the Makhasa community, who chose to restore it to wilderness. The lodge is owned and run by that community, and the fences with the neighbouring reserve have been removed so wildlife moves freely.
