Most guests park at False Bay near Hluhluwe and cross to the lodge by private ferry, which avoids a long stretch of sand road. The crossing must be booked in advance. Self-drive to the lodge is possible and involves 26km of dirt road.

Yes. The ferry transfer from False Bay must be arranged before you travel, and reception will confirm the crossing time with you. If you are running late, phone ahead, because the ferry may not be able to wait.

At False Bay on the mainland. Overnight guests meet the lodge representative to unload onto the ferry and are then directed to parking. Close your windows, lock the vehicle and take everything you need for the stay with you.

King Shaka International Airport near Durban is roughly 282km from Malkoha Lake St. Lucia, about a three and a half hour drive north through the coastal plains of KwaZulu-Natal.

The ferry route needs no more than a road-legal vehicle to reach False Bay. The self-drive route to the lodge crosses dirt roads through a tribal area with livestock on them, so drive slowly and check conditions with reception before you set out.

The gates on the self-drive route are locked from 22:00 to 05:00 daily. If you are arriving late, phone the lodge ahead so that someone is expecting you, and use the intercom at the gate on arrival.

There is a Vodacom tower on the property, so Vodacom coverage is good and other networks can be patchy on the Kwa-Nibela Peninsula. Wi-Fi is available in the chalets and the public areas of the lodge.

To the ferry at False Bay (recommended)

Route A intro

The ferry crossing must be booked in advance. Guests park at False Bay and cross to the lodge by boat, which avoids 20km of sand road through the KwaNibela community, where road conditions vary.

Route A steps

From Hluhluwe, travel through the town and turn left at the fourth traffic circle. | Travel 1.5km and turn right onto the R22 Sodwana Road, crossing over the railway. | From the railway tracks, travel straight for 7km. | A brown road sign reads False Bay Resorts. Turn right here onto the P414. | After 3.7km, turn left onto the D540, following the signs for False Bay Resorts. | Turn right into False Bay and report at the gate. | Through the gate, follow the signs to the main office for False Bay. | Day visitors park at the main office. Overnight guests meet the lodge representative to unpack onto the ferry and are then directed to parking. | Close your windows, lock your doors, and take everything you need for the holiday with you.

On the crossing

The ferry trip is 40 minutes. Cold drinks and water are available on board and anything consumed is charged to your account on arrival. | Phone +27 (0)71 100 8886 if you get lost, if you are arriving after 21:30, or if you think you will miss the scheduled pick-up. Self-drive to the lodge

Route B intro

This route runs overland through the KwaNibela community. It includes 26km of dirt road and is only advisable if you need a vehicle at the lodge.

Fill up in Hluhluwe. The Engen garage is the last petrol station on this route. | Travel through Hluhluwe and turn left at the fourth traffic circle. | Travel 1.5km and turn right onto the R22 Sodwana Road, crossing over the railway. | From the railway tracks, travel straight for 25.4km. | A brown road sign reads Nibela Lake Lodge. Turn in 500m and follow the green Nibela and Sobhengu signs. | Turn right onto the dirt road at the L554 road sign. Travel straight for 4.2km to a crossing, then turn right at the L542. | Travel straight for 4.6km to a T-junction. Turn right at the T-junction at the sign L541 and travel straight for 13km. | You are now travelling through a tribal area. Expect livestock on the road and schools in the area, animals are unpredictable, and it is advisable to travel at 60km/h. | At the gate, use the intercom or call the lodge on 035 562 9005 or 071 100 8886. Gates are locked from 22:00 to 05:00 daily. | Once inside the property, follow the signs to reception to check in and collect your keys.

Approach from Johannesburg: Through Bethal, Ermelo, Piet Retief, then through Pongola, taking the N2 southbound to Hluhluwe. Take the Hluhluwe offramp.
