Practical Comforts on the Edge of the Kruger

Burchell’s Bush Lodge is a self-catering property, so what it offers is built around letting you look after yourselves easily. Reception handles the bookings and the questions, housekeeping keeps the chalet in order, and the pool, the Wi-Fi and the braai on your own patio do the rest. The generator covers the gaps when Eskom cannot.

Reception sits up the sand road in the burgundy building and is where every stay starts: check-in from 15:00, activity bookings, and the answer to whatever the bush throws at you. Housekeeping services each chalet daily, and linen and bath towels are provided.

Braai Patios

Every chalet has its own covered patio with a built-in braai, and guests treat it as the real living room. Most meals end up out there in the fresh air, with the bush a few steps away and birdsong starting up before anyone has finished a first coffee.

Wi-Fi runs across the lodge at no charge, which is enough to send the day’s photographs home and check the weather before a drive. Reception has the connection details when you check in.

The lodge runs a backup generator during load shedding and Eskom outages. Some services and facilities may be limited while it is running, and a daily generator fuel contribution may be applied. Reception will explain what is affected during your stay.

Cool Off After The Morning Drive

The swimming pool sits among the bushveld trees in the middle of the property, and it is a delightful respite after a hot day of game viewing. Birdlife fills the surrounding forest while you are in it, and the walk back to your patio takes about a minute. Swimming towels are not provided, so bring your own.

Drives leave the lodge and enter the Kruger through the Paul Kruger Gate a kilometre away, with rangers who know where the animals are likely to be and why. Early morning brings predator activity and late afternoon the sunset sightings. Half-day and full-day options, open from six years. Booking is essential.

A guided round of archery on the property, open to anyone from six years up and run by an hour at a time. It is the thing that keeps everyone busy between drives, and the one activity the children usually ask to repeat. Booking is essential.

The Eco-Trail

A free self-guided trail through the bushveld surrounds of the lodge, marked with information boards that explain what you are walking past. Follow it at your own pace and learn the trees, the tracks and the birdlife of the Lowveld. No booking needed.

Game Viewing on the Property

The lodge sits in open woodland with no fence between it and the bush, so wildlife moves through the camps freely. Impala, nyala, kudu, bushbuck and vervet monkey are all regular, and the many bushveld trees pull in a real variety of birds, especially in summer.

The Paul Kruger Gate is one kilometre from the lodge, which puts the whole southern Kruger within reach of an early start. Big 5 game viewing is central to the Burchell's experience, and the proximity means you are through the gate while the light is still good.

The only golf course inside the Kruger National Park, a short drive away on the road to Paul Kruger Gate. Built in 1972 and now open to the public, it is a 72-par, nine-hole, 18-tee course where fairways run through natural bushveld and wildlife sightings are part of the round.
