Highland Run is not a resort with a reception desk and a room-service menu, and that is the whole point of coming. What it has instead is two cottages kitted out well enough that a group can settle in for a week, a river running through the property, and a reserve to walk into when the fishing is done. Spekboom River

The Spekboom is one of the few streams in South Africa where trout breed freely. Both banks offer varied fishing for five kilometres, in a series of rapids, riffles, runs, glides and pools. At the height of summer it runs full and fast, and through the drier months it turns gin clear.

Both cottages have braai facilities, and iNsomi House has an indoor braai as well as an outdoor one. Firewood is supplied for the fires and guests bring their own charcoal and firelighters. The furnished patio outside each cottage is where most evenings end up.

Firewood is supplied so you can enjoy evening fires in the heart of the beautiful Spekboom Valley, indoors at the fireplace or outside at the braai. Guests bring their own charcoal if they need it, and wood for the hot tub can be bought on the property.

Each cottage has a fully equipped kitchen opening onto the dining and lounge area, with a stove and oven, microwave, fridge and freezer, cutlery, crockery and detergents. Highland Run has no shop or restaurant, so bring your groceries and your own drinking water.

The open-plan lounge and dining area in each cottage is built around a fireplace, and wood for it is supplied. Ceiling fans and heaters are fitted throughout, so the cottages stay comfortable through the seasons in a mountain valley.

Housekeeping

Highly trained housekeepers see to your comfort throughout the duration of your stay, and clean linen and bath towels are provided at both cottages. The service is limited on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, and a housekeeper gratuity is compulsory.

DSTV and Wi-Fi

Both cottages carry DSTV on selected channels and Wi-Fi, with the password posted at the entrance gate. There is no cellphone reception anywhere on the property, so the Wi-Fi is the only line out and the valley stays quiet.

Private Entrance and Covered Parking

Each cottage has its own private entrance and a covered carport taking two to three vehicles. Guests need a vehicle with good ground clearance to reach the reserve, since the route in runs on gravel road through the Mount Anderson gate.

Mount Anderson Nature Reserve

Highland Run forms part of the Mount Anderson reserve, home to a wide variety of flora and fauna including many species of antelope and the elusive leopard. Guests sign in at the reserve gate on arrival, and a conservation fee is payable per vehicle.

Fishing Rod Hire

You do not need to arrive with a full kit. Fishing rods can be hired by the day or for the whole stay, with flies included on the longer hire, and a breakage deposit is payable on arrival. The team confirms the current rates at booking.

A Wood-Fired Hot Tub Above the Spekboom

Each cottage has a wood-fired hot tub out on the deck, looking across the mountains and down toward the river. Light it in the late afternoon and let it come up to heat while the sun goes off the peaks, then take a glass out with you. Wood for the tub can be bought on the property.

Is there a restaurant or shop at Highland Run?

No. Highland Run is entirely self-catering, with no restaurant, bar or shop on the property, and the nearest town is Mashishing (Lydenburg). Bring everything you plan to eat and drink, including your own drinking water.

Do the cottages have a hot tub?

Yes. Each cottage at Highland Run has a wood-fired hot tub on the deck looking out over the Spekboom Valley. Wood for heating the tub can be bought from the resort, and the team confirms the current charge on arrival.

Can I hire fishing equipment at Highland Run?

Yes. Fishing rods can be hired by the day or for the length of your stay, with flies included on the longer hire. A breakage deposit is payable on arrival. Arrange the hire when you book so the kit is waiting for you.

Is Wi-Fi available and does my phone work?

Both cottages have Wi-Fi and the password is posted at the entrance gate. There is no cellphone reception on the property at all, so tell anyone who may need to reach you that email and the resort landline are the routes in.

What should I bring that Highland Run does not supply?

Charcoal and firelighters for the braai, all your groceries, and your own drinking water. Firewood, linen, bath towels, cutlery, crockery and detergents are supplied. Mountain bikes are not available on site, so bring your own if you plan to ride.
