Everything Bookable Through The Lodge

The reserve runs to 2,000 hectares and it is unfenced, so a good deal of the wildlife watching happens without any effort at all, from the deck or the lounge window. A guided drive is what takes you past that, out to where the animals that keep to the deeper veld spend their days.

Everything here is bookable through the lodge, and everything is easier if you arrange it before you arrive. Beyond the gate, the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site is one of the richest fossil landscapes in the world, and a partner operator runs half-day trips into it.

Guided Game Drives

A two-hour drive across the reserve with a guide, looking for the animals that keep well away from the lodge and are rarely seen from the deck. Children of all ages are welcome, and drives are booked through the lodge rather than online.

Trails run through the reserve for riders who want to see it at their own pace. Riding is recommended for ages seven and up, and bicycles are not supplied by the lodge, so bring your own if you plan to ride during your stay.

Most heritage sites ask you to picture a place as it once was. This one asks something stranger. The caves that run under this part of the Highveld have given up some of the oldest evidence anywhere of the people we come from, which makes the Cradle of Humankind a rare thing: a World Heritage Site whose story belongs to everybody who visits it, wherever they have travelled from.

It also makes for an unusual family outing. Children who would go glassy in a museum tend to sharpen up considerably when they work out that the fossils came from the ground under their own feet, and that the grass and the rock and the light look much as they always have.

You feel some of it from the vehicle without going anywhere near a cave. Drive out across the reserve in the early morning and the reasons people stayed here are laid out in front of you: water held in the rock, shelter in the hillsides, and game moving across open country the way it still moves across these 2,000 hectares today.

The unfenced reserve at Mount Savannah is home to giraffe, kudu, zebra, red hartebeest, impala and gemsbok, along with a good variety of birdlife. Many are seen from the lodge itself, and a guided drive takes you out across the rest of the 2,000 hectares.

How long is a game drive?

Guided game drives at Mount Savannah run for about two hours across the 2,000 hectare reserve. Drives are booked and paid for through the lodge in advance rather than online, so arrange yours when you confirm your stay.

Do you provide bicycles for the mountain biking trails?

No. Mount Savannah has trails through the reserve but does not supply bicycles, so bring your own if you plan to ride. Riding is recommended for ages seven and up.

Is the reserve malaria-free?

Yes. Mount Savannah lies in the Cradle of Humankind in Gauteng, which is a malaria-free part of South Africa. That makes it a practical option for a bush stay with young children.

Can we book a massage without staying over?

Yes. Wellness treatments at Mount Savannah are brought to your room, and visitors who are not staying at the lodge are welcome to pre-book a treatment for the day.

How far in advance do we need to book activities?

Activities at Mount Savannah must be booked and paid for 72 hours before arrival, directly with the lodge. Rates are quoted at the time of booking and are subject to change.
