Game Reserve Holidaying At Its Best

Mjejane Game Reserve runs along the southern boundary of the Kruger National Park, fenced into the Park itself, and Mjejane Bush Camp sits on the bank of the Crocodile River at the heart of it. Nights here are noisy in the best possible way. Hippos work through the grass below the deck, and the morning often opens with elephant moving steadily through the bushveld on their way somewhere.

Discover The Camp

The camp is self-catering, and that turns out to be the point. Chalets run from one to four bedrooms, all of them with a fully equipped kitchen, an open-plan lounge and dining area, and floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto a deck with a built-in braai and a plunge pool. You eat when you are hungry and you swim when it gets hot.

Guided game drives head out morning and evening into Big 5 territory, and the rangers are storytellers as much as trackers, filling in the plants, the animals and what they have long meant to the people living alongside them. Back at camp the day is yours: the pool, the outdoor gym, a round of putt-putt, a frame of pool in the clubhouse, and a shop on site carrying firewood, charcoal, cold drinks and the things you forgot to pack.

Children get their own version of all this. The Dream Xplorers passport sends them after spoor moulds, bird feeders and a junior ranger certificate, which buys the adults a quiet hour by the pool. Evenings are spent on your own deck or around a fire, with the reserve going quiet around you.

Game Drives, Birding And Big 5 Country

Wildlife moves freely through the reserve, so a good deal of the game viewing happens from your own deck. Guided drives take you deeper in, and the birding along the riverine forest is good enough to keep a list. Malelane and its golf courses are a short drive up the N4 when you want a change of scene.

Guided Game Drives

Open game viewers head out morning, midday, afternoon and after dark, into Mjejane's own terrain and Big 5 country. Rangers stop throughout every drive except the night one, and coffee, tea and water come along. Children of all ages are welcome. Sunset drives book out about three weeks ahead.

Birdwatching

The riverine forest along the Crocodile River is the reason to pack binoculars. African green pigeons work through the leaves after wild fruit, the fish eagle calls over the water and purple-crested louries flash through the canopy. There is no charge, and birders can ask to be allocated together on a drive.

    Dream Xplorers

    Children collect a passport at reception and work through it over the week: build a bird feeder, make a spoor mould, complete a mammal list, earn a junior ranger certificate. Enough badges and there are prizes at the end of it.

    Self-Guided Walking Trail

    A walking trail appears on the reserve site plan and in the Dream Xplorers activity list, and the camp's own standing instruction is that guests remain in their vehicle because this is Big 5 territory. Copy is held until the camp confirms where walking is permitted, under what supervision and at what age.

    A Day In The Kruger

    Mjejane shares a fence with the Kruger National Park, and a day in the Park is the obvious excursion. Access is through the Crocodile Bridge or Malelane gates, both reached off the N4. You will need your own vehicle, and it is worth leaving camp early.

    Designed by golfing legend Gary Player, Leopard Creek is one of three major golf courses within a short drive of Mjejane Bush Camp, and a draw in its own right. Tee times are arranged directly with the club, so sort yours out before you travel.

    Yes. Every chalet at Mjejane Bush Camp has a fully equipped kitchen, an open-plan lounge and dining area and a built-in braai on the deck. There is no restaurant on site, so guests cook for themselves or arrange a grocery delivery before arrival.

    Mjejane Game Reserve is Big 5 territory. Elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and rhino all occur, and the riverine forest along the Crocodile River is known for elephant breeding herds and leopard. Guided game drives are the best way to cover ground.

    It is built for families. Mjejane Bush Camp has a children’s play area with a jungle gym and trampoline, a pool, a games room and the Dream Xplorers badge programme. Children of all ages are welcome on game drives, at a reduced rate for under-twelves.

    Mjejane Game Reserve is a moderate-risk malaria area. Guests should speak to a healthcare professional before travelling for current advice on malaria precautions and prophylaxis, and follow that advice for the length of the stay.
