Olifants River Lodge works as well for a family long weekend as it does for a company strategy session, and the facilities carry both. There are four swimming pools, water slides, a nine-hole mini golf course and sports courts outside, a games room and a bar with a big screen for when the Highveld weather turns, and a restaurant that will feed 200 people or one tired family. The outside patio is the spot for a light lunch, and the Sunday buffet is a standing fixture.

Gramadoelas runs from breakfast through to dinner without any ceremony. Set meals, generous buffets, hot coffee, milkshakes and cold beers, and a kitchen happy to put together something quick for the children. The Sunday lunch buffet is the one the regulars plan their weekend around.

The Bushveld Bar

The bar is fitted with a big screen, which settles the question of where to watch the game. It opens onto the outside patio, so a light lunch, an afternoon drink or a long evening with the rest of your group all happen in roughly the same spot.

Four Swimming Pools

There are four pools here. One has a water slide attached, one is scaled down for smaller children, and one is indoors and heated, which means a Highveld winter does not end the swimming. The lawns around them are wide enough to spread out on.

The On-Site Shop

No need to drive back out for the thing you forgot. The shop on the property carries ice, charcoal, ice creams, chips and the general run of travel necessities, and it is stocked through the day.

The nine-hole mini golf course is a reliable hit with children and adults, and it turns up in a lot of team builds. Play it as a family, split into teams, and let the competitive streak run its course.

The Games Room

The games room covers the afternoons the weather takes away. Pool, table tennis, darts and chess are all set up and waiting, and most of them run on a refundable deposit collected at Gramadoelas.

Sports Courts and Cricket Nets

The volleyball court and the cricket nets get as much use from guests as they do from team builds. There is also jukskei, an old Afrikaans sport pioneered in South Africa, which is far harder than the people playing it make it look.

The Enkulu Centre is the property’s conferencing and function heart, with four breakaway rooms that combine into one venue. Over the years it has taken exhibitions, conferences, workshops, team builds and weddings, all on the same floor.

The coin-operated laundromat runs on R5 coins and takes care of a long camping trip. Parking is on site, and Wi-Fi covers the main lodge area. A backup generator keeps things running when the power does not.

Laser Clay Pigeon

A variation on traditional clay pigeon shooting. Real shotguns are disabled and fitted with harmless infra-red laser equipment that registers hits on modified reflective clays. Up to five people can shoot at the same clay at once, and it works after dark too.

Traditional archery with longbows, taught from scratch in a compact but thorough lesson covering handling and aiming. Groups compete against each other for the highest score, and it is usually the person nobody expected who turns out to have the eye for it.

FAQ

Is the indoor pool heated all year?

Yes. Olifants River Lodge keeps an indoor heated swimming pool alongside its two outdoor pools and the kiddies pool, so swimming carries on through the colder Highveld months.

Do the games and activities cost extra?

Several of them run on a small refundable deposit collected at Gramadoelas or at reception, and a few carry a per-game or per-person fee. Ask at reception on arrival for the current arrangement.

Is there a shop on the property?

Yes. The on-site shop at Olifants River Lodge stocks ice, charcoal, ice creams, chips and general travel necessities, which saves the drive back out to Middelburg for the thing you forgot.

Does the Wi-Fi reach the units?

Wi-Fi covers the main lodge area only. It does not extend to the accommodation units or the campsites, so plan for a quieter connection once you are settled in.

Is there a restaurant, or is everything self-catering?

Both. Gramadoelas Restaurant serves set meals and buffets through the day, and there is a bar and a kiosk, while most units also have their own kitchen or kitchenette and braai facilities.

What happens to the facilities during load shedding?

A backup generator covers the property, though some services and facilities may be limited while it is running. A daily generator fuel levy can apply, so check with reception when you arrive.
