WHAT WE SET OUT TO DO

Sustainability woven into the everyday

Behind the scenes, sustainability is woven into the everyday details. Fresh, seasonal ingredients are used wherever possible, with much of the produce grown in the resort’s own greenhouse to bring vibrant flavour to every dish while keeping each meal closely connected to the surrounding landscape. This mindful approach extends beyond the plate, with pure spring water sourced on the property and much of the resort powered by its own solar farm, creating a stay that feels as natural as the setting itself.

The Company will comply with the legal requirements and conservation programme for preventing the pollution of the environment, whether air, ground or water, and ensure that any environmental incident is dealt with immediately to reduce the impact on the environment as per the Heritage structures.

Small steps go a long way in making a bigger change

Running a resort with a focus on sustainability involves a range of responsibilities that touch every part of the operation. Four of the eight tiles below are written from sourced facts. The remaining four have no source and are deliberately empty.

Transportation

Much of the resort runs on its own solar farm, with panels on the self-catering chalet roofs. A backup generator covers grid interruptions.

Water Conservation

An on-site greenhouse and hydroponic system grow lettuce, spinach, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes used directly in guest meals.

Waste Reduction

Pure spring water is sourced on the property, reducing reliance on bottled water brought in from outside the Berg.

Sustainable Sourcing

Produce from the hydroponic system also supplies the Langkloof school and orphanage nearby, delivered twice a week.

Our Initiatives

Energy, water, waste and CO2 initiatives

Is to train staff on how to save/reduce our carbon footprint by involving them on the green initiatives taking place at work. Below is the detailed status update of our environmental initiatives.

Energy Saver Status

• Energy-saving devices in all suites
• CFL lamps replaced with LEDs
• 10 jacuzzis heated by 7kW heat pumps
• 5 tumble dryers with automatic
moisture sensors

Water Saver Status

• Tap restrictors: 3L/min
• Shower heads: 4L/min
• Shower buckets to catch cold water
• 8,000L grey water pumped to 2x 10,000L
tanks for flushing

Waste Efficiency Status

• We recycle 30% of all our waste
• We have bins for recyclables, compost & general waste/non recyclables

Much of the resort runs on its own solar farm, and solar panels are fitted to the self-catering chalet roofs. A backup generator covers grid interruptions, and a fuel levy may apply while it runs.

An on-site greenhouse and hydroponic system grow lettuce, spinach, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes used in guest meals. The remote setting, with the nearest town some distance away, is part of why the resort grows its own.

Yes. Produce from the hydroponic system supplies the nearby Langkloof school and orphanage twice a week, and the resort funds staff wages and daily running costs at the Langkloof Orphans Fund.

Pure spring water is sourced on the property. This cuts the volume of bottled water trucked up the Oliviershoek Pass and keeps the supply close to where it is used.
