FAQ

Drive the N4 to the Lebombo border post, the EN4 to Maputo and then the EN1 north to Macia, where you turn off to Praia do Bilene. It is roughly 733km from Gauteng, and all of it is tarred, so no 4×4 is needed.

Bilene Club Lodge is about a two-hour drive north east of Maputo, on the EN1 through Marracuene, Manhica and Macia. Macia sits 157km from Maputo, and Praia do Bilene is signed off to the right just past the Usave and Shoprite.

Travel in daylight. Road markings and signage on the route to Praia do Bilene are poor, and the resort recommends guests plan the drive so they arrive before dark. There is a petrol station opposite the resort.

South African passport holders do not require a visa for Mozambique. South African travel law requires an unabridged birth certificate for anyone under 18 leaving or entering South Africa, so carry it with the passports.

There is an ATM in Bilene and a government medical clinic in the village. Basic products are available at the local market, and there are restaurants and bars within close reach of Bilene Club Lodge.

Route from Gauteng, by road

  1. Take the N4 from Gauteng or Pretoria to Nelspruit. Continue on the N4 past Malelane and Komatipoort until you reach the Lebombo border post.
  2. After the border, follow the EN4 toll road to Maputo.
  3. After 45km you reach the first toll gate, about R40. After a further 29km you come to a bridge; turn left.
  4. After 17km you reach the next bridge; take a left again and follow the EN1. After 2km you reach the Cumbeza toll gate. Continue on the EN1, the road north out of Maputo towards Xai-Xai and Inhambane.
  5. You pass through Marracuene, Manhica and Macia, which is 157km from Maputo.
  6. At Macia, take the right turn-off to Praia do Bilene, just past the Usave and Shoprite.
  7. Entering Bilene, keep left at the traffic circle and follow the road to Main Promenade, with the market on your left. Turn right and follow the road until you see a petrol station on your right. The boom gate entrance to Bilene Club Lodge is on your left.

Good to know before you drive

  • The roads to Bilene are tarred and no 4×4 is required.
