A Small Resort Built Around The Water

Bilene Club Lodge is a compact, self-catering resort on the shore of the Uembje Lagoon. The beach, the pool, the jetty and the slipway are all a short walk from the units, and the boom gate opens onto a village with a market, a petrol station and a handful of restaurants. There is no restaurant or shop on the property itself, which is why the kitchens and braai patios matter as much as anything else on this page.

The Uembje Lagoon

The lagoon runs about 8km wide and 27km long, reaching 50 metres at its deepest, and it sits at the bottom of the lawn. A sandbar holds the Indian Ocean back, so the shallows along the shore stay warm, calm and safe for swimming and paddling.

A White Sand Beach With Sunshades

The lodge opens straight onto its own stretch of white sand, with sunshades set out along the water. It is a short walk from the units, which makes it easy to drift between a swim, a shady seat and the pool through the day.

The pool overlooks the beach and comes with loungers, so you can watch the lagoon without leaving your seat. It is the easy option on a hot afternoon, and it keeps younger swimmers happy when the family wants to stay close to the units.

Slipway And Jetty

Bring your own boat or jet ski and launch from the resort slipway, with jetties on the water alongside. Fishing permits come from Marintimho, not from the lodge, and reception will point you to the right office before you head out.

Every unit is self-catering, with a fully equipped kitchen and a furnished patio with braai facilities. There is no restaurant or shop on the property, so most guests shop at the local market and buy fish and prawns from the fishermen.

Dream Xplorers runs at Bilene Club Lodge, with lagoon snorkelling, shell hunting, sandcastles, bingo and movie nights among the activities on offer. Children sign up at reception on arrival and collect badges as they work through each category.

The resort runs 24-hour security with controlled access at the boom gate, and reception is staffed until 22:00. The site plan sets aside parking inside the grounds, with a separate area for boats and trailers near the launch entrance.

Get Out Onto The Uembje Lagoon

Kayaks, snorkelling gear, scheduled boat trips to the lagoon mouth, sunset cruises and dune sledding across the water. Excursions are booked at reception.

Kayaking And Canoeing

Kayaks, canoes and paddle craft are kept at the lodge, with paddles and life jackets in assorted sizes. The lagoon is calm enough that first-timers manage easily, and a sunset paddle brings you close to flamingos, pied kingfishers and malachite kingfishers.

Snorkelling

Snorkelling gear for adults and children is available at reception, and staff will point you to the better spots around the lagoon. Guided snorkelling trips run for a minimum of four people and a maximum of eight, so book ahead to secure your place.

Boat Trip To The Lagoon Mouth

The scheduled trip runs twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, leaving the jetty at 09:00 and returning at 12:00 with up to 20 people aboard. Private trips to the mouth can also be arranged for groups of four to fifteen.

Boat Trip And Walk To Turtle Rock

A 45-minute boat trip and a 25-minute walk over the dunes bring you to Turtle Rock, where there is a good chance of seeing leatherback turtles. The trip takes a minimum of four people and a maximum of fifteen, and is booked at reception.

Sunset Cruise On The Lagoon

An hour and a half on a motorboat, limited to ten people, returning to Bilene beach just after dark. Departure shifts with the season, so check the time at reception. Bring your own drinks or ask reception to organise something local.

Lagoon Fishing Trips

A private fishing trip on the lagoon runs one and a half to two hours and is arranged at reception, with a small selection of rods available. Choose a larger motorboat or a small dhow for up to four, with a minimum of four people and a maximum of eight.

No. Bilene Club Lodge has no restaurant or shop on the property, and every unit is self-catering. There are restaurants and bars within close reach of the resort serving Mozambican food and local beer, and a market in Bilene village.

Yes. Bilene Club Lodge has a swimming pool with loungers, overlooking the beach and the Uembje Lagoon. Swimming towels are not provided at the resort, so bring your own for both the pool and the beach.
