This is a time when the bush wakes early, light is soft, and some of the region’s most remarkable species put on a show for those who rise with the sun. Join passionate birding guide Sarel van der Westhuizen for a weekend dedicated to these feathered treasures. Early morning outings will focus on observing the Yellow-throated Sandgrouse as they descend to drink, a spectacular and often unforgettable sight. Alongside these elegant visitors, the elusive Short-clawed Lark may also be encountered, offering keen birders the chance to tick off a truly special species. Days will be structured around gentle guided walks, targeted birding excursions, and plenty of time to enjoy the reserve’s natural beauty. Evenings will bring fireside gatherings, good company, and talk of the morning’s sightings beneath a wide October sky.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

Check-in: from 14:00
Check-out: before 10:00
Late check-out: Tents and villa: R1000 per hour or part thereof. Chalets: R500 per hour or part thereof
Conservation levy: R40 per adult per day, R25 per child aged 3 to 17 per day, free for children under 3. Guests 18 and over pay the adult fee.
Getting around: The main lodge is 2km from the tents and 1km from the villa. Guests need their own transport, or lodge transfers are available at R250.
Power: The reserve runs a backup generator during load shedding. Some services may be limited while it runs, and a generator fuel levy may apply.
House rules: No pets allowed; No smoking policy applies; Swimming towels are provided

FAQ

Does the rate include meals, or is it self-catering?

Both apply at Finfoot Lake Reserve. Some accommodation is sold with dinner, bed and breakfast daily plus two included activities per person per day; other units are self-catering with fully equipped kitchens. Each listing states which it is.

Is there a pool?

Two swimming pools sit alongside sun decks at the main lodge, next to the central lapa bar. Several accommodation types also have a private plunge pool with loungers on their own deck. The listing shows which.

Is all the accommodation at the main lodge?

No. Some accommodation sits between one and two kilometres from the main lodge at Finfoot Lake Reserve. Guests need their own transport between the two, or the lodge can arrange a transfer for a fee.

What time is check-in and check-out?

Check-in at Finfoot Lake Reserve is from 14:00 and check-out is before 10:00. A late check-out can sometimes be arranged and carries an hourly surcharge.

Do the rooms have air conditioning?

Yes. Every accommodation type at Finfoot Lake Reserve has air conditioning, and DStv is available on selected channels. The full amenity list for each unit shows on its listing.

Is there accommodation for a large family or group?
