THE CAMP ITSELF

Elevated, Open-Sided and Deliberately Small

The main area is one long elevated structure with dining, a bar and two lounges running into each other, and a raised platform above for viewing. It is open on the pan side, so the boundary between the lounge and the grassland is more of a suggestion than a wall. Guests watch game from the armchairs, which is a large part of the point of building here.
Around it are the things a camp of twenty-eight people actually uses: a pool with its own deck, a boma firepit, a curio shop that takes cards, a library, and daily laundry. There is Wi-Fi in the main area and nowhere else, no telephone in the tents, and a satellite phone and radio kept for emergencies. Most guests come to count that combination as a facility, usually by the second evening.

Main Lodge and Viewing Deck

The whole main area sits on an elevated platform: open dining, a bar on the large deck, two lounge areas and a raised viewing platform above them. Kwikamba Pan lies straight ahead through the day, and after dark the same deck becomes the camp’s stargazing spot.

Meals move indoors and out as the day suggests. Continental breakfast goes out before the morning drive, lunch is served in the dining area, high tea follows the siesta and dinner arrives once the vehicles are back. The cooking is plain, generous and made for a shared table.

The pool has a deck of its own and sits a few steps from the main area, which matters where summer daytime temperatures average thirty-five degrees. The view over Kwikamba Pan carries on from the water, so a swim and a sighting are not mutually exclusive.

Boma Firepit

A campfire area under open sky, and where most evenings end up. Chairs are set around the fire, dinner sometimes comes out to meet it, and the talk tends to be about what everybody saw that afternoon. Nothing competes with the sky out here, so the stars do the rest.

Curio Shop

A small shop beside the main area, useful for the thing you meant to pack and did not. It takes both cash and card, which is worth knowing this far inside a national park. The selection is modest, so buy anything you genuinely need before you leave Kasane.

Library

A quiet corner stocked with books on the animals, plants and natural history of the Chobe region, kept for reading at leisure. It earns its keep in the middle of the day, when the heat is up, the vehicles are parked and somebody wants to name what they saw at dawn.

Sustainability

The camp runs on a solar farm and holds Eco Tourism Botswana certification for its low impact on the surroundings, with current waste disposal systems handling everything on site. In a place this remote, running lightly is simply how the camp works.

There is no spa building at Nogatsaa Pans and there does not need to be. Treatments are given in your own tent, on your own deck or just inside it, in the hours between the morning drive and high tea. The view does not stop while you are on the table, which is not something a treatment room can offer.

Drives, Hides and the Long View From Camp

Morning and afternoon game drives, private hides at the water, birding across the pans and forests, and a deck that does a great deal of the work on its own.

Morning and afternoon drives go out in open 4x4 vehicles, three to four hours after breakfast and about two at sundown. The road network takes in the Ngwezumba riverbed, teak forest, open pans and waterholes. Vehicles seat six guests, and a private vehicle can be arranged at extra cost.

Private Viewing Hides

Hides sit at the pans and waterholes, putting you at eye level with whatever comes down to drink. Nothing is chased and nothing is announced. It suits photographers, and anyone who would rather wait an hour in one place than cover twenty kilometres of road.

Armchair Safari

Game viewing from the lodge decks and the raised platform, with no vehicle involved at all. Herds cross the pan in front of the main area through the day and birds work the water's edge, so guests who stay in camp between drives usually still have something to report at dinner.

Pans, teak forest and the Ngwezumba riverbed sit within a few kilometres of one another, and that range of habitat is what brings the range of birds. The seasons move different species onto the water, which rewards casual watchers and people who arrived with a list.

The afternoon drive runs about two hours and stops somewhere with a view for a drink as the light goes. Where it stops depends on where the animals are and what the sky is doing, so no two evenings put you in quite the same place.

The raised viewing deck was built partly for this. Humidity in the Chobe area stays low and there is nothing on the horizon competing with the sky, so the stars arrive in full. Most guests find their way up there after dinner and stay longer than they meant to.

Yes. The pool has its own deck, sits a few steps from the main lodge area and keeps the view over Kwikamba Pan. It is a welcome thing in the hot, wet months when daytime temperatures climb.

Wi-Fi is available in the main lodge area only, not in the tented suites. There is no telephone communication at the camp. A satellite phone and a radio are held for emergencies.

There is no spa building. Massage treatments are given in the privacy of your own tented suite, usually in the quiet hours between the morning game drive and afternoon tea. Arrange them with the camp on arrival.
