Because every suite here is self-catering, the facilities are built around people who are staying a while as much as people passing through. There are two pools, one of them heated and open off the gym on the first floor, a sauna, a games room and a Tech Room the kids tend to find first. Downstairs there is a business centre, a guest relations desk that books tours and car hire, and a concierge who knows the city. The gym is fully equipped and open to guests throughout your stay, so a routine does not have to pause for the trip. A personal trainer who is also a sports therapist takes appointments and offers remedial massage. Afterwards, the private sauna is a good place to sit and do nothing at all.

The outdoor pool sits on the deck alongside Strolla, a few steps from the promenade and the sea air. It is the part of the hotel where afternoons disappear: a swim, a lounger, something cold from the bar, and the light going gold over the Atlantic by early evening.

The heated pool is reached off the gym on the first floor, which makes it the one that gets used when the Cape wind is up and the outdoor deck is not tempting. Regular water aerobics classes run here, and swimming towels are provided so you can walk down with nothing.

The Tech Room is open to Peninsula guests only and holds a good choice of family-friendly gaming consoles, including Xbox, Xbox One and PlayStation. There are tablet stations with internet access alongside them. It is usually the first place younger guests find and the last place they leave.

The games room gives everyone somewhere to go when the weather turns or the afternoon needs filling. It runs alongside the Dream Xplorers programme, which uses it for several of the badge activities, from table tennis to the pool and billiards competition.

Two computer work stations sit in the foyer area, with any help you need handled by the guest relations personnel a few steps away. Free Wi-Fi runs throughout the hotel, and the CTICC and City Bowl are close enough that a morning meeting need not eat the day.

Positioned next to reception on the ground floor, the guest relations desk is staffed by people trained to talk you through what is on in and around Cape Town. They book tours, arrange car hire and confirm flights. The desk runs 07h00 to 18h00 Monday to Friday and 07h00 to 15h00 on Saturdays.

Concierge and travel desk

The concierge books tours and travel experiences so that you are not doing it from your phone at breakfast. Between the desk and the free shuttle, most of what people come to Cape Town for can be arranged the night before and done the next day without a car.

A complimentary door-to-door shuttle runs within an 8km radius of the hotel, which reaches the V&A Waterfront, the City Bowl and much of the Atlantic Seaboard. The My City bus service stops close by for anything further afield. Airport transfers are arranged separately through the desk.

Airport transfers

Cape Town International Airport is around 25km from Beach Road. The complimentary shuttle covers an 8km radius, which stops short of the airport, so a transfer is booked separately. Give reservations your flight times and they will have a vehicle waiting.

Every suite has a kitchen, and the grocery service means you do not have to fill it yourself. Send a list and it is delivered to your suite, which is worth doing before a longer stay or a trip with small children who eat on their own schedule.

Braai facilities

Communal braai facilities are there for guests who would rather cook outside than eat out. Charcoal and gas are sold at the hotel so there is nothing to carry in. Ask at reception and they will point you at the braai area and get you set up.

Room service runs 24 hours, which is the part of an all-suite hotel that gets appreciated at odd times: a late arrival, a long flight, a night nobody wants to leave the balcony. In-suite dining is available alongside it.
