WHAT WE SET OUT TO DO

Small Changes, Repeated Across 110 Suites

A hotel this size uses a lot of water and a lot of electricity, and in a city that has lived through a drought that is not an abstract problem. The work at The Peninsula is unglamorous and specific: restrictors on every tap, LED lamps in place of CFL, heat pumps on the jacuzzis, buckets in the showers catching the cold water, grey water pumped to tanks for flushing, and bins separated so that roughly a third of what leaves the building is recycled. Staff are trained on all of it, because a policy nobody uses saves nothing.

Responsibilities

Small Steps Go A Long Way In Making A Bigger Change

Running a hotel with a focus on sustainability touches most parts of the operation. These are the areas the plan covers day to day.

Transportation

A complimentary shuttle runs within 8km, which keeps guest cars parked and trips shared.

Water Conservation

Tap restrictors, low-flow shower heads and grey water recycling reduce what the hotel draws.

Waste Reduction

Separated bins for recyclables, compost and general waste keep a third of it out of landfill.

Sustainable Sourcing

Energy Management

LED lamps, in-suite energy-saving devices and heat pumps on the jacuzzis cut consumption.

Educating Guests

Guests are encouraged to join our eco efforts with easy, impactful tips during their stay.

Training and Development

Staff are trained on how to save and reduce the hotel's carbon footprint at work.

Local Partnerships

We work with local farmers and groups to grow a greener, stronger community.

Our Initiatives

Energy, Water, Waste and CO2 Initiatives

The aim is to train staff on how to save and reduce our carbon footprint by involving them in the green initiatives taking place at work. Below is the detailed status of each area.

Energy Saver Status

• Energy-saving devices in all our suites
• All the hotel’s CFL lamps changed to LED lamps
• All 10 jacuzzis heated with 7kW heat pumps
• 5 tumble dryers with moisture sensors that switch off automatically

Water Saver Status

• Tap restrictors on all taps, using 3 litres per minute
• Shower heads using 4 litres per minute
• Buckets in the showers to catch the cold water
• 8,000 litres of grey water pumped to 2 x 10,000 litre tanks for flushing

Waste Efficiency Status

• 30% of all our waste is recycled
• Separate bins for recyclables, compost and general non-recyclable waste

FAQ

The hotel works to four areas: energy, water, waste and carbon. Practical measures include energy-saving devices in every suite, LED lamps throughout, tap restrictors, grey water recycling for flushing and separated bins for recyclables and compost.

Tap restrictors across the hotel limit flow to three litres a minute and shower heads to four litres a minute. Buckets in the showers catch the cold water, and eight thousand litres of grey water are pumped to two ten-thousand-litre tanks for flushing.

Energy-saving devices are fitted in all the suites and the hotel’s CFL lamps have been changed to LED. All ten jacuzzis are heated with 7kW heat pumps, and five tumble dryers have moisture sensors that switch them off automatically.

Around 30 percent of all waste at The Peninsula is recycled. Separate bins are provided for recyclables, compost and general non-recyclable waste, and staff are trained on how the separation works so that it holds up day to day.

Responsibility runs from the employer’s section appointee and the site manager through service provider managers, ad hoc contractors and a health and safety consultant who reviews the plan annually. It also covers every employee and contractor working on the premises.

ERO is the eco rating programme Dream Hotels and Resorts properties are assessed under. It scores a property across environmental categories and issues a certificate. Ask reception for the current certificate for The Peninsula.
