EXPLORE MONTAGU

Adventure, Relaxation and Family Fun Await

Activities at Avalon Springs run from active to horizontal. Most guests make a beeline for the hot pools, and there is plenty more on the property once the children have had enough of the slide. Step outside the gate and Montagu opens up: walking trails into the kloof, a nine-hole golf course, mountain-bike routes through the Langeberg wilderness, a Saturday market and the Breede River within easy reach.

AVAILABLE ACTIVITIES

On The Property, And Within Reach Of It

Soak in the Hot Springs

Nine outdoor pools and an indoor pool take mineral-rich water straight from Cogman's Kloof at 43 degrees. The further the water has to travel the cooler it arrives, which gives you a spread of temperatures to work through over a morning.

The Water Slide and Super Tube

The water slide runs all day beside the children's pools and the water sprayers. A super tube was added during the refurbishment and sits inside the stretch of the resort reserved for overnight and timeshare guests.

Dream Xplorers

Children sign up at reception, collect a digital passport and work through six badge categories, from rock painting and beading to a nature bingo walk and a spekboom planting project. Enough badges earns a prize from the Dream Xplorers Champion.

Lawn and Social Games

Soccer, volleyball, chess and other family games run from the activity centre on the day visitor side, close to the Beach Pool and the sprayers. Nothing needs booking and nothing needs equipment you have to bring.

Braai and Picnic

Communal braai and picnic areas, with separate sections for overnight guests and day visitors. Day visitors can reserve a braai for exclusive use and it comes with the grid, wood, charcoal and firelighters, or order a picnic basket ahead.

A Treatment at the Wellness Spa

Therapeutic massages and beauty treatments at the private spa on the property, open to overnight guests and day visitors from 08:00 to 17:00 daily. Booking ahead is essential.

Montagu Guano Cave

The Montagu cave (also called the Guano Cave) consists of a large, high chamber at the back of which is an opening to a smaller and longer tunnel-like cave once filled with bat guano. In the 1890s the guano was emptied out. Under the guano were found two important items a bored stone and a stick of olive wood with a rounded head at one end.

Montagu Town

Set aside a day for the town itself. Montagu took the Kwela Western Cape Dorpie van die Jaar title in 2022 and KFM's in 2021, and it earns it: the Montagu Museum, the Nature Gardens and the Montagu Cellar are all worth the walk, and the Saturday market runs at Euvrard Park on Bath Street.

Badskloof Walking Trail

The favourite local walk runs between the hot springs and Eyssenhuis at Joubert Park. It covers 2.2km and takes about an hour at a comfortable pace, with the kloof around you for most of it. Permits come from Avalon Springs reception or the Joubert Park office.

Aasvoëlkrans Route

A second popular walk, starting on Riebeeck Street in Montagu and covering 3.2km in a little over an hour. Lovers Walk, Bloupunt and the Cogmanskloof Trail are the other names locals will give you when you ask.

Montagu Golf Club

A nine-hole course a short drive from the resort, with the Langeberg standing over the whole round. The Western Cape is generous to golfers in this respect: wherever you end up, there is usually a course within reach.

Mountain Bike Trails

Montagu has become a serious mountain-biking town and runs an annual fun ride in August. Routes open off the Langeberg wilderness area and the Montagu MTB map is the guide, with new trails added regularly. Rugged terrain, big rock formations and a good family ride among them.

Tennis

Tennis courts sit next door to Avalon Springs.

Mountain-Top Tractor Rides

The Avalon Springs team can book you onto a tractor ride at Protea Farm. Large trailers amble up to 1,500 metres above sea level for a view across the Langeberg and over the top of Robertson, and the trip includes a potjiekos meal with wine, juice, coffee, tea and plenty of dried fruit and nuts from the Montagu district.

Breede River: Fishing, Sailing and Boating

The Breede River Valley is a stone's throw away and full of things to do on and beside the water: hiking, fishing, sailing and river cruises. Our team will help you book, and the River Goose boat trip is the one to ask about. Viljoensdrift pairs a wine tasting with a picnic basket from its deli.

Wine Tasting and Farm Visits

Cogman's wine list is drawn from farms within 50km of Montagu, which gives you a ready-made route: Ashton, Bonnievale, McGregor, Montagu and Robertson. The Montagu Cellar is the closest of them and sits in town.

Cogmanskloof and Mazawattee

Walk a short way down the kloof and you may catch climbers working on Mazawattee, the hardest sports climb in South Africa, which only a handful of people have topped out. The drive through Cogmanskloof on the R62 is worth doing slowly in either direction.

Padstals and Local Shops

The road into and out of Montagu is lined with padstals and small community shops, which is where the dried fruit, the preserves and most of the town's character live.

Montagu Wears Its History On The Street

Cape Dutch Streets and a Khoi Name

The town’s tree-lined streets and Cape Dutch fronts sit beneath a gorge named for the Cogmans, a Khoi chiefdom who were here first.

Our History

An inscription cut into the rock by A.J. De Wit and dated 1812 tells us the springs were known here well before that. The story that comes with it is of a trekboer who hurt his hand mending an ox-wagon wheel, bathed it in a nearby stream, found the water warm and traced it back to its source. His hand is said to have healed quickly, and word of the spring spread through the Cape Colony until people were arriving from across the country and beyond to try it.

Khoi rock drawings survive in caves and on rock faces across the greater Montagu area, so the springs were almost certainly known for hundreds and possibly thousands of years before that. The real date is long gone. The land around the water changed hands many times and was put to many uses, and since 1982 it has been part of Avalon Springs.

Cogmans Kloof, also written Kogmanskloof, is the gorge that cuts through the Langeberg between Ashton and Montagu on the R62. It takes its name from the Cogmans, a Khoi chiefdom that lived in the area around the beginning of the 18th century.

The poort is incised almost entirely into intensely folded sandstone of the Table Mountain group and follows the course of the Kigna River, which runs south-west of Montagu. Those formations were laid down, folded and faulted more than 500 million years ago, and at the Ashton end the older Malmesbury group sits beneath them. How the kloof came to cut clean through a mountain range is not settled; several processes probably worked together, and the rivers may simply have been there first, cutting down as fast as the land rose. The shape of it is still changing, too slowly for anyone to notice in a lifetime.

In January 1981 heavy rain over the southern Karoo brought the Keisie and Kigna rivers down in flood. They met at their confluence in Montagu and drove through Cogmanskloof to Ashton and the Breede River, with considerable loss of life and damage to property. A plaque fixed to the rocks just past the Activity Centre marks how high the water reached.
