Distance from Cape Town International Airport: Approximately 185km, about two hours by road

From Cape Town on the N1

Take the N1 to Paarl, through the Huguenot Tunnel or over Du Toit’s Kloof Pass, and on to Worcester. You will pass a Shell Ultra City on your left and reach a set of traffic lights on the N1. Go straight across those and turn right into Worcester at the second set. Follow that road over a railway bridge and all the way down to High Street, where you turn left. Carry on about 1km and watch for signs to the right onto the R60 towards Robertson, Ashton and Montagu.

Stay on the R60. Once through Ashton it becomes the R62 and takes you through Cogman’s Kloof into Montagu. Entering the town you are on Long Street; stay on it almost to the end. Turn left into the very last road, Cross Street. At the next stop turn right into Bath Street and follow it about 3km out of town. On your left you will see illuminated signs for Avalon and Montagu Springs. Turn left into Uitvlucht Street, swing immediately right, and follow the street all the way down to our car park.

From Cape Town along the N2

Follow the N2 over Sir Lowry’s Pass, through Caledon and Riviersonderend. Roughly 24km after Riviersonderend, watch for the Stormsvlei turn-off on your left, turn there and follow the signs to Bonnievale. As you approach Bonnievale you cross the Breede River. At the T-junction turn left into the main street, then turn right towards Ashton and Montagu at the next stop. Go around the church and follow the same road out of town, with the Bonnievale Golf Course on your right and a railway crossing to watch for. At the T-junction turn left onto the R60 to Ashton, then right at the next T-junction onto the R62 to Montagu, and follow the Montagu directions above.

From Beaufort West

6km outside Beaufort West on the Cape Town side, turn left onto the N12. That takes you via Klaarstroom and Meiringspoort to De Rust and on to Oudtshoorn. Find your way onto the R62 and head through Calitzdorp, over the Huisrivier Pass, through Ladismith, where the R62 turns left, then Barrydale and on to Montagu. The first road on your right coming into town is Cross Street. Turn right there and follow the Montagu directions above.

An alternative for the more adventurous: down the N1 as far as Prince Albert Road, left onto the R328, over the Swartberg Pass to Oudtshoorn, then as above. It is not recommended at night, in bad weather, or if you are towing.

From up country on the N1

Coming down the N1 through Touwsriver, roughly 22km out of the town on the Cape Town side, you will see a sign on your left for Montagu via the Koo Valley on the R318. Turn left there and follow the route for about 70km. It is beautiful in parts and it demands your attention: there are two testing passes with some very tight hairpin bends, and you can expect snow in winter. As you come into the outskirts of Montagu you will see illuminated signs on your right for Avalon and Montagu Springs. Turn right into Uitvlucht Street, keep right, and follow it all the way down to our car park.

There is a gravel alternative for 4×4 drivers, from Touwsriver via Ouberg Pass and Langkloof.

From Mossel Bay along the Garden Route

As you pass Swellendam on your right, watch for the turn-off to Ashton, where you turn right off the N2 onto the R60. Roughly 70km later you reach a T-junction. Turn right onto the R62, with Ashton to your left, towards Montagu, and follow the Montagu directions above.
