Energy and water are the two things a camp in the bushveld cannot take for granted, and they make up a large share of what it costs to run Mjejane Bush Camp. The camp works to a Sustainable Environmental Management Programme that sits under the Dream Hotels and Resorts corporate sustainability policy, and most of it comes down to unremarkable daily habits: full laundry loads, timers on the pumps and pathway lights, separated bins in every chalet and trees planted around every new build.

Environmental Policy

The use of energy and water is central to the products and services Mjejane Bush Camp provides and represents a significant share of its operating costs. Rising costs, questions over security of supply and climate change all raise the importance of controlling that use and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. This policy sits with the Dream Hotels and Resorts corporate sustainability policy and supports the group’s mission, vision and core values. Mjejane Bush Camp recognises that it is located in an eco-sensitive area and aims to keep its impact on the environment to a minimum, through a Sustainable Environmental Management Programme.

Our Goal

To keep preventing environmental pollution, to stay current with new policies and research, and to reduce consumption, waste and the camp’s carbon footprint by saving electricity and water and by recycling.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate this policy to all partners, suppliers and staff, and share the camp’s goals with them.

  • Provide a workplace free of recognised hazards and maintain healthy working conditions for all employees.

  • Commit to green purchasing and make this policy publicly available.
  • Commit to reducing the camp’s carbon footprint.

Where The Effort Actually Goes

Running a camp inside a game reserve touches a wide range of daily operations. These are the areas Mjejane works on.

Energy Management

Energy-efficient globes throughout, timers on pathway lights and pool pumps, and energy-efficient equipment only.

Water Conservation

Water-saving shower heads in every chalet, filters on outlets, and a water meter read daily so unusual usage gets investigated.

Waste Reduction

Separation bins in all chalets and a back-of-house recycling centre for sorting glass, tin and plastic.

Sustainable Sourcing

Firewood sold in the shop is rotationally sourced, and single-use plastic items have been taken out of the shop.

Educating Guests

Guest awareness material around the camp, so visitors can join in with the easy things during a stay.

Training And Development

Staff awareness programmes and signage across the camp, so the practices are known and used daily.

Local Partnerships

The Lugedlane community shares in the reserve's operation, from ranger training to maintenance and services.

Reforestation

At least 30 trees planted around each new chalet as it comes into occupancy, with care taken not to clear during the build.
