Built Around A Long, Slow Afternoon

Between the morning and afternoon game drives there is a stretch of day to fill, and Mjejane Bush Camp is set up for exactly that. The shop, pool and entertainment area sit together at the centre of camp, with the clubhouse alongside. Everything is within walking distance of the chalets, and none of it needs booking except the spa.

The clubhouse is where everyone regroups once the drive is over. There is a big screen, Wi-Fi and enough room for a large group to spread out over an afternoon. It sits alongside the shop, pool and entertainment area at the centre of camp.

Table tennis, a pool table, a dartboard, a foosball table and TV games, all under one roof. It is the reliable answer to a hot afternoon or an evening when nobody feels like going back out, and it works as well for adults as it does for children.

The camp pool sits at the centre of things, next to the shop and the entertainment area, so it is easy to keep half an eye on children from a lounger. Every chalet also has its own splash or plunge pool on the deck if you would rather stay put.

An open-air gym in the camp grounds, for anyone who would rather not let a week of braais go entirely unanswered.

A jungle gym and a trampoline in the camp grounds, which is where children tend to end up after a couple of hours sitting still in a game viewer. It is the reason a parent occasionally gets to finish a cup of coffee.

Putt-Putt

A putt-putt course in the camp grounds, signed out at reception against a refundable deposit. It fills the gap between the morning and afternoon drives without anyone having to get in a vehicle.

Convenience Store And Curio Shop

The on-site shop carries firewood, charcoal, firelighters, cold drinks and the day-to-day essentials, along with curios. It does not stock fresh produce or bread, so bring those with you or arrange a delivery from the Malelane SuperSpar, which needs seven days’ notice.

Viewing Deck

A raised deck with an upper level looking out over the Crocodile River and the Kruger National Park beyond it. It is the one place in camp where you can stand still, out of the vehicle, and watch the far bank properly.

Bush Deck

A deck out in the bush, available to hire by the day and laid on with cutlery, crockery and wood. Book it at reception when you want a meal away from the chalet. Currently R200 per day, subject to change.

Airport transfers

Cape Town International Airport is around 25km from Beach Road. The complimentary shuttle covers an 8km radius, which stops short of the airport, so a transfer is booked separately. Give reservations your flight times and they will have a vehicle waiting.

Mjejane’s spa is mobile, so the therapist arrives at your chalet and the treatment happens with the bush in front of you. There is a range of beauty and wellness packages, and reception holds the menu. Book at least 24 hours ahead. Treatments are weather dependent and subject to availability.

Guided Game Drives

Open game viewers head out morning, midday, afternoon and after dark, into Mjejane's own terrain and Big 5 country. Rangers stop throughout every drive except the night one, and coffee, tea and water come along. Children of all ages are welcome. Sunset drives book out about three weeks ahead.

Birdwatching

The riverine forest along the Crocodile River is the reason to pack binoculars. African green pigeons work through the leaves after wild fruit, the fish eagle calls over the water and purple-crested louries flash through the canopy. There is no charge, and birders can ask to be allocated together on a drive.

    Dream Xplorers

    Children collect a passport at reception and work through it over the week: build a bird feeder, make a spoor mould, complete a mammal list, earn a junior ranger certificate. Enough badges and there are prizes at the end of it.

    Self-Guided Walking Trail

    A walking trail appears on the reserve site plan and in the Dream Xplorers activity list, and the camp's own standing instruction is that guests remain in their vehicle because this is Big 5 territory. Copy is held until the camp confirms where walking is permitted, under what supervision and at what age.

    A Day In The Kruger

    Mjejane shares a fence with the Kruger National Park, and a day in the Park is the obvious excursion. Access is through the Crocodile Bridge or Malelane gates, both reached off the N4. You will need your own vehicle, and it is worth leaving camp early.

    Leopard Creek Golf Course

    Designed by golfing legend Gary Player, Leopard Creek is one of three major golf courses within a short drive of Mjejane Bush Camp, and a draw in its own right. Tee times are arranged directly with the club, so sort yours out before you travel.

    FAQ

    No. Mjejane Bush Camp is fully self-catering and has no restaurant. Every chalet has a kitchen and a braai, and the on-site shop stocks firewood, charcoal and basics. For a meal out, Marloth Park and Malelane are a drive up the N4.

    The convenience store and curio shop at Mjejane Bush Camp stocks firewood, charcoal, firelighters, cold drinks and day-to-day essentials. It does not carry fresh produce or bread, so bring those with you or arrange a grocery delivery before arrival.

    Yes. The Malelane SuperSpar delivers to Mjejane Bush Camp, and orders need to be placed with the store at least seven days before arrival. Contact them directly to arrange the order and the delivery date.

    Mjejane Bush Camp has a mobile spa offering beauty and wellness packages. The therapist comes to your chalet, so treatments must be booked through reception at least 24 hours in advance. They are weather dependent and subject to availability.

    Wi-Fi is available in all chalets at Mjejane Bush Camp and in the clubhouse. Connectivity in a game reserve on the Kruger boundary is limited, so plan for messages and email and leave video calls for home.

    Mjejane Bush Camp has a backup generator, and every unit carries an emergency light in case the generator itself fails. Some services and facilities may be unavailable while the generator is running, so check with reception on arrival.
